A short history of the Smiths
Episode One of Tell Me About… The Podcast is slightly different to the normal dynamic of our episodes…
To ensure that you know who we are, why we are doing the podcast and, frankly, what right we have to do a business podcast we have dedicated this first episode to telling you a short history of Paul’s business experience and Beth’s journey so far.
First up is Paul/Dad – to summarise he was a drummer in a rock band, had a rocky start at school, fell in love with my Mum (shout out to Michele) then decided to buck up his ideas and fell into a life of start, build & sell. Starting businesses he found a niche for, building them up and selling them on. After a varied and overall successful period of doing this he took a turn to giving back and guiding the next generation of entrepreneur. Now he spends his time playing golf, wining and dining, looking after the grandkids and being a business angel… this is where the podcast comes in and the idea to spread some of that helpful (and understandable) knowledge to the masses. Dad doesn’t believe in retirement… it’s not healthy just to stop… “If you’re good at something keep doing it”.
Then onto me… a little less to discuss as I would consider myself to be still learning my craft and on the path to starting my own business. I’ve had a couple cracks at developing and selling products and learnt a lot from these and my career as an Interior Designer in London for a few of the top companies. But now I’m looking to the future and picking Dad’s brain on business. Oh and business terms aren’t my forte so I’ll make sure the podcast is in terms everyone can understand.
“Entrepreneurial spirit, if you have it, is always bubbling under the surface.”
In this series we aim to cover:
1 – Self Exploration – Questions to ask yourself
2 – Teams – “Teams that are good are greater than the sum of their parts”
3 – Process – Breaking down barriers and dissecting myths
4 – Business Fundamentals – Not going off too quickly, cash is king, plan-fix-do, executing speed not haste and marketing.
To name just a few…
